The process for the Smart Data Discovery Challenge is as follows:

Open call for Smart Data use cases

From 26 October 2023 to 8 December 2023 we are running an open call for cross-sector Smart Data use case ideas. In the open call we’re inviting you to submit a short description of a cross-sector Smart Data use case idea that you believe could make a difference for consumers or small businesses and for wider society.

After the open call closes, an independent expert panel (including members of the Smart Data Council) will assess submitted use case ideas and select a longlist of the most promising based on published assessment criteria. We intend to longlist 10 to 15 use case ideas, though the panel may select more or fewer depending on entries received.

Workshop

If your use case idea is longlisted, we will invite you (in early January 2024) to participate in one of several invite-only workshops that will take place in the week commencing 12 February 2024. The purpose of the workshop will be to:

  • Further develop and refine your cross-sector Smart Data use case idea together with other longlisted ideas
  • Explore the potential benefits to consumers, businesses and wider society from the use cases
  • Explore what will be needed for these use case ideas to come to life and the potential challenges which may need to be overcome
  • Explore the (synthetic) data required for testing the use case ideas in a potential challenge prize

These workshops will include relevant experts to help further define and test your use case idea.

Smart Data community event

We will be holding a hybrid event in March 2024 to bring together the emerging Smart Data community. We intend to invite to this event all those who submitted a use case idea in the open call, alongside a range of other members of the community. If your use case idea is longlisted following the open call, we will invite you to pitch your use case idea at this event. A prize pot of up to £20,000, with individual prizes up to £5,000 each, will be allocated to the most promising pitches as judged by an independent expert panel.

Challenge prize

Following the Discovery Challenge, our aim is to launch a Smart Data challenge prize later in 2024. Participants in this prize will benefit from a share of up to £750,000 and access to a bespoke data sandbox enabling them to prototype and test a range of cross-sector Smart Data use cases.
